Quick Primer – Changes to the GP Rural Incentives Program

GP Rural Incentives Program

The new budget saw some changes to the General Practice Rural Incentives Program (GPRIP). Here is a brief rundown of the main points of how the system will work from July 1, 2015.

  • Locations will be classified under the Modified Monash Model, seen by many as a more evidence-based approach to geographical classification
  • Eligible locations will be in MMM 3-7
  • Payments will range from $4,500-$60,000 depending on location and year of service
  • GPs who are new to the scheme will receive payments after eight active quarters providing Medicare services in MMM 3-5 areas and after four active quarters in MMM 6-7 areas
  • Leave periods can be taken up to five years without losing status
