The medical profession certainly has plenty of upward mobility, but not everyone knows how to spot opportunities for growth or put themselves in a good place to be chosen for promotion. Today, we’ll give you a few tips to help you improve your chances of advancing in your career and getting on step closer to the top of the heap.
Step up by Speaking Up
Often, people might not be exactly looking for a healthcare management role, but they don’t want to miss an opportunity either. The solution is to speak up when the time is right and put yourself in a positive light. For example, if one of the managers or bosses gets fired or resigns, don’t be afraid to volunteer for handling some of their work until a replacement can be found. You may not have much management experience, but if you know the tasks well, you can offer your help in getting things done. A helpful attitude and great initiative are things the higher-ups will look at very closely when choosing a new manager.
Acquire an Advocate
Another thing to remember is that is very difficult to move up all by yourself. The smart thing to do is to get yourself an advocate within the business or at least within your department. You may be one of several nurses who are being considered for a management position such as Director of Nursing, and it helps to have someone in your corner to vouch for you. When you have people recommending you for a promotion and speaking to the quality of your work, it makes a real impact with the decision-makers and gives you a much better chance of moving up into that higher role. The same is true for doctors who are up for the Head of Surgery position as well as any other roles in the medical field.

Don’t Settle on your Salary
When you’re good at your job, your salary should tend to reflect that. If not, it might be time to go to the negotiating table and try to fix it. The key here is to know what you and your skills are worth and not be afraid to say so. Don’t just roll over and accept the first salary offer you get. Selling yourself short will only hurt your chances for advancement in the long run.
Crush your “Can’t”
One of the surest ways to kill your chances to move up is to tell your boss that you can’t do something. If any task is given to you, approach it with a “can-do” attitude. It might be something that you’re really not sure how to do, but don’t let that scare you. Just do your best and try to figure out how to get it done. Even if you do have to go back to the boss and report that you were unsuccessful, that’s ok. If you’ve tried everything you know and given it your best effort, they will still recognise that as a job well done. You could also come up with some backup plans so that you can tell the boss you have other options available if they want to give them a try.
